Penelope Cruz joins Ridley Scott and Pedro Almodovar films |
Penelope Cruz has joined the cast of two new films.
She has been confirmed for a role in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, reports Deadline.
Cruz is also expected to reteam with Pedro Almodovar on Los Amantes Pasajeros (The Brief Lovers).
The actress had already been rumoured for Scott’s next movie, in which she will appear opposite Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and her husband Javier Bardem.
The Cormac McCarthy-penned film centres around a southern lawyer (Fassbender) who finds himself embroiled in the drugs trade.
Los Amantes Pasajeros is said to be set around an affair on an airplane.
Cruz has collaborated with Almodovar on numerous films including Broken Embraces, Volver, All About My Mother and Live Flesh.

Penelope Cruz Could Star With Bardem in “The Counselor” |
Penélope Cruz could star with her husband Javier Bardem in the Ridley Scott drama “The Counselor,” The Hollywood Reporter said Thursday.
Cruz and Bardem have already acted together in “Jamon, jamon” (1992), “Carne tremula” (1997) where they shared no scenes and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008), a film that earned Cruz, a Madrid native, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
The project, in which Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt have already agreed to participate, has a script written by Cormac McCarthy, the author of the novel on which “No Country for Old Men” was based, a film for which Bardem won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor
The story, like that of “No Country for Old Men,” is set on the U.S.-Mexican border and revolves around a lawyer (Fassbender) who gets involved in drug trafficking with the help of a pair of friends (Bardem and Pitt) to solve his money problems.
Cruz would play the wife of Fassbender’s character. According to the magazine, no formal offer has yet been made to the actress, but several conversations have taken place and it is expected that Cruz will shortly agree to participate.
Work on “The Counselor” is scheduled to begin in late June.
Currently, Bardem is filming alongside Daniel Craig in the latest James Bond flick “Skyfall.”
Photos of the Spanish actor surfaced online, sporting a police uniform and a blond wig in his role as the villain in the movie.
Angelina Jolie, who is now engaged to her long-time love, Brad Pitt, is also rumored to have a part in the film as the female lead — but nothing has been set in stone.

Woody Allen re-titles pic ‘To Rome With Love’ |
After toying with “Bop Decameron” and “Nero Fiddled,” writer-director Woody Allen has finally settled on a title for his next movie, as Sony Pictures Classics has set a June 22 release date for “To Rome With Love.”
Title was selected as an homage to the city of Rome, where the film was shot on location last summer.
Title “Nero Fiddled” was discarded because overseas auds aren’t familiar with the expression. “To Rome With Love” will be used for the film’s worldwide release.
Story follows a number of people in Italy — some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors — and their romances, adventures and predicaments. Pic stars Allen, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page.
A Gravier Prods. film, “To Rome With Love” was produced by Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum and financed by the Italian production and distribution company Medusa Film.
Sony Pictures Classics handled U.S. distribution for Allen’s last picture, “Midnight in Paris,” which has grossed nearly $150 million worldwide.

New on DVD: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ |
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Walt Disney, $29.99; Blu-ray, $39.99/$49.99
There’s a distinct “hanging around town after graduation” vibe to “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth installment of the billion-dollar Disney franchise. With Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and director Gore Verbinski all out of the picture, Johnny Depp is left to shoulder the bulk of the swashbuckling as Capt. Jack Sparrow, with some help from Penélope Cruz as Blackbeard’s daughter (and Ian McShane as Blackbeard). Depp has always been the star of the show, but the earlier films worked Capt. Jack into a bigger, stranger tapestry, while “Stranger Tides” feels like just another pirate adventure — solidly made and even exciting at times, but nothing special. The DVD and Blu-ray add a blooper reel, animated shorts and a commentary track by director Rob Marshall.

Penelope Cruz’s back in Rome |
Penelope Cruz returned to Rome to continue filming the Sergio Castellito movie ” Venuto al Mondo” that started production in September on location in Sarajevo and Croatia, Italian media said.
The Spanish actress, who was in Rome several weeks ago shooting the Woody Allen film “Bop Decameron”, is staying at a hotel far from the downtown area with her son Leo, sources close to the actress said.
The star of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” does not eat out at restaurants and will give no press conferences. The only invitations she accepts are to the filmmaker’s home.
The movie, inspired by the like-named novel by Margaret Mazzantini, Castellito’s wife and one of Italy’s most popular writers, tells the story of a mother’s trip with her 16-year-old son to the Sarajevo of today, the hometown of his father who was killed while still a young man during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
Co-starring with Cruz is actor Emile Hirsch.
The production crew will remain in the Italian capital until Oct 26, Italian media said.

Penelope Cruz to make another movie with Woody Allen |

EW has learned exclusively that Penélope Cruz is set to reteam with Woody Allen. The actress previously appeared in Allen’s 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, for which she won the Oscar for best supporting actress. “I know [what I'm doing next], but the thing is that I have to ask the director what I can say and what I cannot say,” Cruz tells EW. “Because he’s very secretive. It’s…it’s a movie with Woody Allen. But I really cannot say anything about the story or the characters.”
Allen recently announced that he planned on shooting his as-yet-unnamed next film in Rome. The director’s new movie Midnight in Paris will open in select cities on May 20, the same day as Cruz’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sets sail in multiplexes.
