New on DVD: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Walt Disney, $29.99; Blu-ray, $39.99/$49.99

There’s a distinct “hanging around town after graduation” vibe to “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth installment of the billion-dollar Disney franchise. With Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and director Gore Verbinski all out of the picture, Johnny Depp is left to shoulder the bulk of the swashbuckling as Capt. Jack Sparrow, with some help from Penélope Cruz as Blackbeard’s daughter (and Ian McShane as Blackbeard). Depp has always been the star of the show, but the earlier films worked Capt. Jack into a bigger, stranger tapestry, while “Stranger Tides” feels like just another pirate adventure — solidly made and even exciting at times, but nothing special. The DVD and Blu-ray add a blooper reel, animated shorts and a commentary track by director Rob Marshall.

Penelope Cruz’s back in Rome

Penelope Cruz returned to Rome to continue filming the Sergio Castellito movie ” Venuto al Mondo” that started production in September on location in Sarajevo and Croatia, Italian media said.

The Spanish actress, who was in Rome several weeks ago shooting the Woody Allen film “Bop Decameron”, is staying at a hotel far from the downtown area with her son Leo, sources close to the actress said.

The star of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” does not eat out at restaurants and will give no press conferences. The only invitations she accepts are to the filmmaker’s home.

The movie, inspired by the like-named novel by Margaret Mazzantini, Castellito’s wife and one of Italy’s most popular writers, tells the story of a mother’s trip with her 16-year-old son to the Sarajevo of today, the hometown of his father who was killed while still a young man during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

Co-starring with Cruz is actor Emile Hirsch.

The production crew will remain in the Italian capital until Oct 26, Italian media said.

Penelope Cruz to make another movie with Woody Allen

EW has learned exclusively that Penélope Cruz is set to reteam with Woody Allen. The actress previously appeared in Allen’s 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, for which she won the Oscar for best supporting actress. “I know [what I'm doing next], but the thing is that I have to ask the director what I can say and what I cannot say,” Cruz tells EW. “Because he’s very secretive. It’s…it’s a movie with Woody Allen. But I really cannot say anything about the story or the characters.”

Allen recently announced that he planned on shooting his as-yet-unnamed next film in Rome. The director’s new movie Midnight in Paris will open in select cities on May 20, the same day as Cruz’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sets sail in multiplexes.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”: New Trailer!

As if we weren’t already excited enough about the new “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” flick, they’ve released a new trailer.

The new clip includes plenty of teasers to make fans long for the May 20th, 2011 release date even more ravenously than before.

According to the studio, the plot centers on Captain Jack Sparrow as he crosses paths with a woman from his past and decides to search for the Fountain of Youth. And of course, that’s just the beginning of the adventure.

New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Story Details Emerge

We’ve just seen the first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and it sets up the basic concept: Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) ends up working with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) to find the fountain of youth, with famed pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) an an unusual accomplice/rival. Meanwhile Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) is working with the crown in some measure. Oh, and there are mermaids and zombies.

Now director Rob Marshall, who is new to the series, has given up a few more details.

ComingSoon talked to Mr. Marshall at a Pirates fan event, and he explained,

The whole opening and the first third of the film takes place in London. So we start on dry land and there is an impostor that Jack is looking for. He then escapes from the palace, gets captured by King George and there is a huge carriage chase…[W]e set sail and that is sort of the second act. It’s a new ship, Blackbeard’s ship, the ‘Queen Anne’s Revenge.’ Then Barbossa has a new ship called the ‘Providence.’ The third act is this incredible jungle adventure through caves where they are looking for the Fountain of Youth.”

And he explains that, as seen in the trailer, Barbossa “has joined a different side… which is really shady.”

Quite a lot of the first act of the original Pirates took place on land as well, so it’s not like the London opening will present a wild departure for the series, but I’m looking forward to seeing how the film’s crew created a period/fantasy version of the city. (Some of it is seen in the trailer, and the carriage chase is nodded to in that edit, too.) And, more than anything else, I’m looking forward to seeing Ian McShane growling his way through the script.

First Official Images From Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

With the first Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides trailer due to hit theaters next week in front of Tron: Legacy, it’s time to crank up the marketing campaign for the sequel that I still can’t quite believe actually exists. We got a look at the first teaser poster a few weeks ago, which showed us pretty much nothing, but now USA Today is premiering the first official image from the film, featuring Jack Sparrow and Penelope Cruz’s pirate temptress Angelica tramping through the swamp.

Reporter Anthony Breznican was on the set to witness it all in action, but beyond some basic plot details didn’t come back with much. Jack, as we know, is on a mission to find the Fountain of Youth on behalf of King George II (Richard Griffifths), and he’s forced to work with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) on the mission. Oh, and don’t expect any great epiphanies or character development for Jack Sparrow; as Johnny Depp put it, “Captain Jack is about as fully realized a human as he can be. He’s there. He’s going to stay there. Which is fine.”

Take a look at the new images above, and look for the On Stranger Tides trailer to hit the web December 13. The movie opens May 20 next year.
